Damon Salvatore
---- THE BASICS
Character's Full Name:
Damon
Damon is a Greek name meaning “one who tames or subdues”. He cannot, for the life (or unlife) of him, figure out how his name has anything to do with his personality. He supposes he does have the power to tame people (compulsion), but he didn’t receive this power until long after his birth. Overall, he likes his name because it’s different, much like Damon himself. He’s never been one to follow orders or to conform to society. So, while it doesn’t fit in the conventional sense, it fits in the unconventional and that’s the way Damon likes things.
Armand
Armand is a French name meaning “a man in the army”. He is under the impression his father picked this one out. Giuseppe Salvatore was a man who loved war and he intended for his eldest son to become a war hero from his birth. Unfortunately, Damon ended up hating the war, deserting the Confederacy. Still, his middle name reminds him of his mother (French) who died when he was only ten years old. Damon had been incredibly close with his mother and took her death especially hard.
Salvatore
This one is fairly obvious. Salvatore is an Italian name meaning “savior”. Damon’s father was a proud Italian who moved to Mystic Falls for the good of his family. Damon frequently uses his last name to pick up women (ex: “The name’s Salvatore, as in savior.” *wink**wink*). However, despite its usefulness, Damon has mixed feelings regarding his surname as it connects him to his father (whom he very strongly disliked) and his brother (whom he only very recently began to get along with again).
Nicknames and Aliases: Damon despises nicknames and there isn’t much one can do with Damon, anyway. However, he’s sure to have had a multitude of aliases over the years.
Age: 171, but he looks about twenty-four.
Species: Vampire.
Played By: Ian Somerhalder.
Appearance:
Damon stands at about 5’9”, only two inches shorter than his younger brother (something that never fails to bother him). What he lacks in height, he makes up in muscle. Damon has dark hair that falls to just below his earlobe. He styles it depending on his mood, sometimes leaving it shaggy, other times cutting it short. His eyes are a bright blue that seems to stop most people in their tracks. Damon is extremely fond of his eyes as they’re unique, a trait he prides himself on.
Damon is rarely seen in anything other than blacks, grays, and the occasional dark blue. On any given day, he may be found wearing straight-leg jeans, a v-neck shirt (usually black), combat boots, and his trusty leather jacket. In the winter, Damon tends to switch it up a little bit, wearing sweaters and thermals. But, for the most part, he sticks to his v-necks covered by the leather jacket he rarely goes without. Damon isn’t quite sure why he likes the jacket. Perhaps it’s cool and sort of badass like himself. Either way, it’s important and he carries a spare in his car (just in case).
In the eighties, Damon decided it was time he got a tattoo. Instead of something garish, he chose to get a simple message on the inside of his right arm. The ink says “hic et nunc” meaning “here and now”. Damon enjoys living his unlife to the fullest. The tattoo is just a simple reminder not to forget to have fun.
Personality:
Arrogant
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Damon looks down on just about everyone, believing himself to be the best of the best. His opinion is always the right opinion (unless Elena has an opinion). On the other hand, the arrogance is really just Damon covering up all of his insecurities. He’s not actually sure of anything, so he pretends to be.
Witty
One of his best qualities, according to Damon himself. He’s absolutely no good with touchy-feely talk. He is not mushy and he’s not sensitive. So, when forced into some sort of conversation involving feelings, Damon will bring as much witty dialogue in as he possibly can (mostly to distract whoever he’s talking to). In the end, he can usually irritate them to the point when they give up (unless, again, they’re Elena).
Charming
Damon can talk his way into (or out of, depending on the situation) anything. When he first arrived in Mystic Falls, he was able to charm all of the women on the Founders’ Council to include him in their meetings. He convinced the Sheriff and Carol Lockwood that he was on their side, supplying them with vervain and keeping himself in the loop. Later, he was able to charm his way into Jenna’s home for dinner with the Gilberts. However, on occasion, he’ll turn on the charm to pick up women he can later eat.
Impulsive
Damon rarely thinks before he acts. He does things based on instinct alone because he feels safest relying on his heart rather than his head. Damon’s mind is a dark place and it’s much easier to focus on things that don’t hurt as much. Focusing on pure instinct rids him of the need to think anything through or enter that part of his mind he can’t stand.
Lonely
Despite his claims otherwise, Damon is very lonely. Again and again he’s fallen in love with women who don’t want him. He’s been fighting with his brother for almost two centuries, leaving him without a family for most of that time. Damon’s problem is admitting to his loneliness. He can’t do it. It’s why he cared so much when Ric decided to hate him. And, it’s why he clings to Elena like a lifeline. She eases the loneliness, even if it’s just a little bit.
Stoic
Showing emotion is not one of Damon’s strong points. He hates vulnerability and will do almost anything to avoid it. However, bottling up his emotions all the time leads to the occasional breakdown. The only thing he can do is make sure there’s no one around to watch.
Uncertain
With Stefan off the rails, Damon’s been left the hero of Mystic Falls. It’s a role he doesn’t feel comfortable taking up, but he doesn’t really have a choice. The result is uncertainty, as he doesn’t have any idea how to be the hero. Damon, instead of taking things slowly and asking for help, decides to take matters into his own hands, making rash decisions and doing his best to keep the few people he cares about safe, no matter who gets hurt in the process.
Caring
Though he would never admit it (ever), Damon cares a whole lot. After spending more and more time with Mystic Falls’ resident supernatural crew, he’s found himself becoming closer to them on an emotional level. Clearly, he cares about Elena and his brother, but he’s also learned to care for Alaric, his first real friend. Furthermore, Damon has learned to be kind to Elena’s friends, even going so far as to include Caroline, Tyler, and Bonnie in his schemes.
Loyal
Damon is unfailingly loyal to those he cares about. He would do whatever he had to if it meant Elena’s safety. Likewise, he would lay down his life for his younger brother if it became necessary. Damon never breaks his word, though he can get creative with the way he promises things (sometimes finding loopholes in the request).
Powers and Strengths:
-Speed: He can run faster than the human eye can see.
-Strength: As a vampire, Damon is extremely strong.
-Compulsion: He is able to get inside a human's mind, forcing him or her to do whatever he asks.
-Evasion: Damon can talk around a question, avoiding an actual answer.
-Seduction: Self-explanatory. He's good-looking and he knows it.
-Ability to detect a lie: It doesn't work on everyone, but Damon knows when Elena is lying to him.
Vulnerabilities and Weaknesses:
-Stakes: Fatal to vampires.
-Werewolf bites: Fatal to vampires.
-Elena: She's able to change his mind, to convince him.
-Stefan: Damon would do anything for Stefan, including throwing himself under the bus, so to speak.
-Humanity: He misses it terribly and the guilt eats at him constantly. Damon wants to live a simple, human life again.
-Blood: Again, self-explanatory (vampire, duh).

---- ROLE PLAY SAMPLE
Peering through the barred window, Damon could see that his brother had made no successful move to escape. In fact, Stefan didn’t appear to have moved at all. He was motionless, slumped forward in the chair, arms and chest still bound by the chains. Curious, Damon shoved the heavy steel door open and stepped into the underground cell. He would admit he’d been surprised at first, that the Forbes’ had been clever enough (even in the old days) to build a cell like this. Still, they were a founding family and founding families in Mystic Falls were notoriously clever when it came to vampires and supernatural entities. He shook his head and sauntered into the dusty little room.
Stefan was still motionless and Damon found himself unnerved by it. He knew his brother wasn’t dead. Stefan hadn’t been exposed to sunlight and he certainly hadn’t been staked to death. Damon circled the chair that held Stefan, wary of sudden movement. A Stefan on human blood was cunning and reckless, impulsive and desperate. Damon would make no move to provoke a physical reaction. He much preferred the verbal sparring when it came to Stefan. Deciding enough was enough, Damon cleared his throat rather loudly and was rewarded by Stefan raising his head to blink at him with red-rimmed eyes.
”Looking good, brother,” Damon mocked him, now at Stefan’s back. He leaned in to whisper in his brother’s ear. ”Hungry, Stefan?” He stepped back, reached into his jacket pocket, and pulled out a blood bag, waving it in front of his brother’s nose. ”How does this look, huh? Do you want it?” He grinned. Stefan was struggling now, craving the blood in Damon’s hand. Damon, unfazed, moved to lean against the wall to his brother’s right. ”You’re a real addict, aren’t you? How’s the withdrawal treating you, Stef? Looks killer.” He smirked. ”I want to give this to you. Really, I do.” He tossed the blood bag from one hand to the other. ”But, we’re going to make a deal first.”
